The University of New Mexico softball team claimed their second Mountain West Conference victory, 13-5, over Colorado State on Saturday afternoon at Ram Field in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Lobos are now 16-17 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while CSU drops to 7-32 and 0-4 in the MWC.
Getting the win for New Mexico was Kari Gutierrez (7-7). In five innings the sophomore faced 25 batters, striking out four and giving up six hits and four earned runs.
New Mexico put up two more runs in the third inning off a Hodgins double to left field and a single by Castro to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Lobos.
The Rams made a charge in the bottom of the third, using a triple to right field by Morghan Doughty, a homerun by Chelsea Bigelow and a Lobo error to score four runs and tie the game.
The tie didn't last long, however, as the Lobos put up three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Stefanie Guillermo reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second when Jessica Lujan-Dresslar was walked. With two outs and two Lobos on, Ingram hit a double to center, driving in Guillermo and Lujan-Dresslar. A CSU error allowed Hodgins to reach first base and Ingram to score making it 7-4 Lobos after four and a half innings.
New Mexico tacked on six more runs on just one hit in the final inning and held the Rams to just one run on two hits, making it a final score of 13-5.
The Lobos will play the Rams again tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT.
