RUIDOSO, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico football team continued training camp Monday with a two and half hour workout at the White Mountain Athletic Complex. The Lobos have six practices remaining in Ruidoso including a final scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 5-7:30 p.m. UNM wore full pads Monday as it continues to prepare for the 2010 season opener at nationally-ranked Oregon on Sept. 4.
A lot of players are getting multiple reps to help create depth and competition. The intensity level of practice remains high as camp enters its final week. Some of the newcomers who have made an impact to this point are DB Ravonne Carter, DT Calvin Smith, LB Toby Ball, TE Brad Miller and WR Martize Barr.
Albuquerque native Mike Muniz, who is in his junior season, has started mixing up reps at guard and center. Muniz is in a battle for the starting spot at center with redshirt freshman Dillon Farrell. Muniz could also provide a backup role for Karlin Givens or Mike Cannon. Seniors Byron Bell and Maurice Mears have handled tackle spots to this point.
Redshirt freshman TE Andrew Aho had an impressive practice Monday. Aho, who is from Roswell, N.M., was praised for his blocking during drills and later had a touchdown reception. Aho made a nice catch on a pass from freshman QB Stump Godfrey in the corner of the end zone. Aho is in a battle for playing time at tight end with sophomore Lucas Reed, true freshman Brad Miller and junior Steve Siciliano.
A common combination this fall has been sophomore QB B.R. Holbrook connecting with sophomore WR Ty Kirk. They hooked up Saturday for a touchdown during the scrimmage and repeated that performance again today during practice. Kirk has been the most impressive wide receiver on the roster and continues to show his athletic ability. Kirk led all MWC freshmen in receiving last year.
