New Mexico vs. UC Riverside
Nov. 14, 2009
Head coach Steve Alford
"I am very excited. That was the way we wanted to start. This game was an anxious game for me from a coaching standpoint just because of our youth and their experience. They have a lot of experience on their team.
I really liked the first half. I thought we did a lot of good things. Even with our experienced teams I don't think we have had a half where we had 14 assists and one turnover. One of the things we have to learn is how to play with a lead and continue to do the things that got us the lead. We know we got to get better, but all in all I was very pleased with our effort tonight."
On individual playing time:
"It is a long season. We were beat up a little bit with Phillip (McDonald). He was kind of a game-time decision. We just got to keep bodies healthy. I thought Will (Brown) and A.J. (Hardeman) did a lot of good things. They are still learning to play with those kind of minutes. It is all new for them. Overall looking at the minutes and rotation I thought it was pretty good."
"Our transition game is ahead of our offense right now. I was concerned about our defense. We haven't been a very good practice defensive team and that is where I get some concerns. Tonight, we did some good things. I was really pleased with our defense."
On play of sophomore A.J. Hardeman:
"Both he and Will have really worked hard. Playing against Daniel (Faris) every day in practice (last year) was not easy. They took their lumps last year as freshmen. They are both athletes. They are very skilled. They just aren't used to the minutes."
