SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The New Mexico softball team completed play in the Commercial Capital Early Bird Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif. with a 6-4 loss to UC Santa Barbara.
The Lobos (0-5) were outhit 10-4 but were tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth after putting three unearned runs on the board in the top of the fifth.
For the third straight day, Kendra Singley and Brittany Putich took charge of the Gauchos and led them to victory. Singley homered to right field in the fifth and Putich singled to center in the sixth to score Nicole Churnock.
Sophomores Amy Ray and Becky Dover led New Mexico at the plate going 1-3. Classmate Caley Peterson took the loss, pitching a complete game. She gave up 10 hits, five earned runs and six walks while striking out three.
Lindsey Herrin earned the win, allowing two hits and one walk over her 1.2 innings of action. Jennifer Davis got the save with a perfect two-thirds of an inning. Both Singley and Putich were 3-4 at the plate.
New Mexico will head to Tempe, Ariz. for the Kajikawa Tournament hosted by Arizona State Feb. 11-13. The Lobos open the tournament with Buffalo on Friday, Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. followed by Texas at 4:45 p.m.
