ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's tennis team defeated Montana State, 7-0, to collect their fifth straight win and improve to 7-1 overall.
The Lobos won all three doubles matches to stay undefeated in capturing the doubles point this season. Seniors Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby and senior Graeme Kassautzki and sophomore Joe Wood improved to 7-1 with wins at the No. 1 and the No. 2 positions. Parkes and Bugby defeated Jakub Dybala and Pawel Turzanski 8-1 while Kassautzki and Wod downed Alberto Fuentes and Albuquerque native Corey Smith, 8-2. Freshmen Ben Dunbar and Elliot Chang evened their record at 3-3 with an 8-4 win over Esteban Ferrero and Myles Perkins.
The Lobos were perfect in singles play as well. Parkes improved to 7-1 at the No. 1 position with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Smith while Kassautzki defeated Dybala at the No. 2 slot, 6-2, 6-3. Freshmen Phil Anderson, Carl Ho and Chang also picked up two-set wins. After falling in the first set 6-7 (5-7), Bugby rallied to win with scores of 6-4 and 10-7.
"It is always nice to play at home," Lobos head coach Alan Dils said. "We are really deep, which is a great problem to have. We have guys who aren't playing who are very good. We are doing a good job on the top end of the lineup with Johnny, Miles and Graeme and our young guys continue to get better every match."
The Lobos will travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, from March 6-8, for the HEB team tournaments. Texas Tech, South Alabama, Middle Tennessee, BYU, Western Michigan, Depaul and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi join the Lobos at the three-day event.
