University of New Mexico senior Ashley Lowery is one of the top returning players in 2006. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native has developed into one of the top defenders in the conference, while helping the Lobos steadily rebuild the program. Lowery earned All-MWC second team honors in 2005 and is looking for another strong season to finish her career as a Lobo.

"Ashley is a tremendous leader, both vocally and by example," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "She is one of the hardest workers and toughest kids this program has seen! She has been the backbone of the development of this program, along with the other seniors!"

What are your expectations this season?

I expect us to do extremely well this season. Of course it would be wonderful to win conference, and conference tournament so we can see the NCAA tournament for the first time, but we have to take it one practice and a game at a time, starting with preseason. We have all been training hard since the end of last season, and I know something good is going to come from our efforts. I feel like we all have a different mind set than we have had in the years past and I feel like we are up for any opponent!

Do you feel like you have improved since the spring season?

I feel like I am more fit and I feel refreshed. My legs have had a slight break from our tough spring season so I am ready to start back up with practices.

What would it mean to you and this team to advance to the NCAA Tournament?

Since I am a senior, and this could be my last few months of soccer ever, a place in the NCAA Tournament would mean so much...I do not want to be done with soccer, I want to drag it out as much as possible. Since the UNM Women's soccer team has never been to the NCAA Tournament, it would mean a great deal to the team and it would say a lot about our program. We have worked hard throughout the spring and summer and this should be a great year for us. We have seven returning seniors that are starters, and a lot of quality returning players. You take that talent and include a strong class of newcomers and we are a strong team.

Why did you choose to attend UNM?

I Choose UNM for tons of different reasons. I loved Kit and Jorge, I felt like they were going to do good things for a building team. I liked the campus, it was exactly what I was looking for in a school. I wanted to be away from home, in a different state, because I wanted a new perspective on life in general. But most of all I LOVED the team! On my other visits the girls didn't have anywhere near half the personality that the girls on the UNM soccer team...I knew nothing but good could come from my decision to attend UNM.

What has been your greatest memory at UNM?

All road trips...we always find a way to make things very wired and very fun...I always get a good ab workout...I don't even know what to say about them, they are some of the best memories of my life.

What is your major and why did you choose that?

My major is Psychology, and I chose it because it really held my interest.

What are your plans after college?

To be honest...not too sure. I would really like to work with sick children (terminally ill--child life program) or perhaps troubled children, but the details are yet to be determined.

Did you play any other sports in high school?

I played basketball my freshman year...the next year I was ready to play, but they turned me away because they said I had too much of a "future in soccer."

Do you have any hobbies?

When I was younger I spent most weekends on a boat with my family so I like to ski and wakeboard...I'm not such a good wake boarder though. I have a 4 and 1/2 year old neice, and we are really close...so I guess I would kind of consider her one of my hobbies.

Who has influenced your life the most?

My family, without them I would be nothing...plain and simple! Everybody probably always responds with family...but its the truth. I would be lost without them.

Describe your personality?

Hard working and focused but always up for a good laugh and a good time.

What would your teammates say about you?

Probably that I am a hard worker, I don't give up too easily.

If you could pick anyone, who would you spend and entire day with and why?

Kilee, my niece, no questions asked!!! We have way too much fun together, and we like to mix things up and get in trouble...she's my little sidekick!

What is your favorite movie?

It really depends on the mood...I like anything that will make me laugh!
