FULLERTON, Calif. --- New Mexico softball upset No. 23/20 DePaul Saturday, 1-0, at the Judi Garman Classic at the Anderson Family Softball Complex. The Lobos split a pair of games Saturday after falling to Nebraska 3-0. New Mexico is 9-13 on the year and will play No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday at 4:30 p.m. MT
Against DePaul (10-7), New Mexico capitalized on a throwing error to score the only run of the ballgame in the second inning. With a runner on second Jessica Lujan-Dresslar knocked a ball to Blue Demon third baseman Amber Patton fielded the ball cleanly, but threw it out of the reach of the first baseman. The error allowed a Lobo runner to score from second base.
Lobo freshman Danielle Castro (2-3) earned the win; she allowed just four hits while she struck out three and walked three in her complete game performance.
In the afternoon game, Nebraska (14-5) held the Lobos scoreless. The Cornhuskers scored a run in the first, another in the third inning and their final run in the fifth. UNM outhit Nebraska 9-7 in the game.
Lobo senior Samantha Hughes was 3-for-4 in the game.
Senior Analise Rubalcava (5-9) took the loss for New Mexico. Rubalcava threw 4 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits. Castro came on in relief to pitch the final 1 2/3 innings allowing only one hit.
The Garman Classic continues Sunday at 4:30 p.m. MT against the nationally-ranked Ragin Cajuns.
