Lobo TV Press Conference Video
"We have another great opportunity against a great team this weekend. Having watched BYU on film over the last couple of days, they are probably playing their best football. They are peaking and that poses a great challenge for us. They went to Laramie and beat what I think is a solid Wyoming team. For us as a team we have our work cut out for us. I've said here many times, the great thing about our team is that week in and week out they come prepared for these types of challenges. The other positive is that we are back home. Our players really love playing here at home and having the support of the Lobo community behind us."
On the character of the Lobos
"I've said this a couple of times and I mean it when I say it. In my 18 years of coaching I've never been apart of a team that has displayed so much character and resolve as this team has displayed. To be 0-9 and to face the adversity that we have faced as a program - I've been a part of some bad teams, but I've never been a part of a team like this team where the character and resolve of it week in and week out is, `let's go find a way to win.' That hasn't changed. It starts up top from the leadership of our 17 seniors. I think that they are the catalyst for this attitude and it's because of them (that we) as a coaching staff and the young guys who have a chance to watch how they handle adversity, really can take some things from this group (of seniors). This being my first senior class as a head coach, they'll leave a legacy here. They've had a successful four or five years that they have been here with the bowl games they've been a part of. What our young guys will find is that we have moved the program forward (because of the effort of the seniors class)."
On what he would change in his on the field approach, looking back
"I think that we have done everything we can to put ourselves in good positions. We are playing with who we have available to us and who we think gives us the best chance to win week in and week out. From a scheme standpoint we know what our players are able to execute. There isn't much that I would change. Obviously I would like to change the outcome of the last few games. The staff has done a great job of preparing our guys with a gameplan or scheme to be successful. We evaluate personnel week in and week out."
On sophomore LB Carmen Messina and the comparison to Brian Urlacher
"I think that Carmen Messina
is a heck of a football player. I think the fact that he is a sophomore is what gets me giddy. Is he putting up Urlacher type numbers? Not just yet. I think that he is an emerging young leader. The way he goes about working and his mentality is what we will be able to build our foundation on defense on. We need to surround him with more players like himself. Carmen has the character that we want for our team and he has a great future ahead of him as a Lobo."
