ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Daniel Gonzalez went 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI and freshman Bobby Mares scattered four hits over 6.1 innings to lead New Mexico to a 5-4 win over San Diego State at Isotopes Park today. The win gives the Lobos a three-game sweep of the Aztecs. The Lobos improve to 17-9 on the season and 4-2 in MWC play. The Aztecs fall to 9-14 and 0-3.

"This was a well pitched ball game," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "We weren't making adjustments on their pitching in the early innings. We made the changes and got hot. This team is good and we are getting better right now."

Down 3-0, New Mexico picked up one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to go on top, 5-3. San Diego State got a solo home run by Cory Vaughn in the top of the eighth that made the score 5-4.

Senior Justin Howard blasted a home run to deep center field for the Lobos first run of the game. With the hit, Howard extended his hitting streak to 27 games since May 21, 2009 and now has the nations longest active hitting streak. Delaware's Carlos Alonzo's streak ended at 32 games today.

In the bottom of the fifth Senior Max Willett led off with a single to left field. Freshman John Michael Twichell moved Willett over to second with a single through the left side. Willett and Twichell were advanced to third and second, respectively after a sacrifice bunt by freshman Alex Allbritton. Senior Daniel Gonzalez grounded out to the Aztec shortstop and scored Willett from third. Twichell scored on a wild pitch from Aztec starter Ethan Miller to tie the game at three.

The Lobos took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs on one hit. With one out Miller issued two consecutive walks to junior All-America candidate Rafael Neda and junior Ryan Honeycutt. Miller was relieved by Ryan Wynveen but saw his first pitch sail opposite field off the bat of senior Cameron Smith for a single. An error handling Smith's single by Aztec left fielder Matt Nadolski allowed Neda to score and give the Lobos the 4-3 lead. Senior Max Willett hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field that scored Honeycutt and made the score 5-3.

Freshman Bobby Mares (2-0) pitched 6.1 innings giving up three runs on four hits, while striking out six Aztec batters. Sophomore Gera Sanchez picked up his fifth save of the season with one inning of work. Sanchez relieved junior Kenny Toves who pitched 1.2 innings giving up one run on two hits. Toves walked pinch hitter Albert Alverez to lead off the top of the ninth. Sanchez was able catch Alverez leaning and picked him off at first base. The Lobo defense turned a 4-3-6 double play for the final two outs of the game.

Gonzalez led the Lobos at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Senior Adam Courcha, Howard, Smith, Willett and Twichell each had one hit and one RBI.
