ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - After turning in its most complete and successful weekend performance this season at the New Mexico Invitational and Air Force Combined Events, the University of New Mexico track and field squad hosts the New Mexico Classic this weekend, Feb. 3-4.
At the first two meets of the 2012 campaign, the Lobos posted solid results. On Jan. 14 at the NAU Lumberjack Open, New Mexico notched 17 top-ten finishers and four medals. A week later at the Cherry & Silver Invitational, the Lobos upped their game and registered 23 top-ten finishes and a trio of titles.
Last weekend, however, New Mexico rolled out its best effort, as personal bests and school records fell. Competing both at the New Mexico Invite and the Air Force Combined Events, the Lobos notched 46 top-ten finishes, more than at the first two meets combined. On top of that, there were nine individual victories, two school records, 64 seasonal bests, and 25 all-time personal records.
Some of the numerous highlights of the past weekend included Jo Moultrie's shattering of two school records, women's pole vault sweeping the medals, Beejay Lee's photo finish triumph in the 60-meter dash, Marin Schweigert's marathon win in the women's high jump, and Richard York's first-place finish in the heptathlon in Colorado Springs.
Currently, the Lobo women check in with a No. 5 ranking in the Women's Mountain Region Poll that was released by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association on Tuesday. The Lobo men are ranked 7th in the men's version of the same poll.
The meet starts Friday at 4 p.m. MT with the Men's Unseeded Pole Vault and Women's Long Jump, and is followed up Saturday with the conclusion of the Women's Long Jump and the start of the Women's Shot Put at 9 a.m. Check RecordTiming.com throughout the meet for live results and GoLobos.com after the meet Friday and Saturday for full recaps and photos.
