COSTA MESA, Calif. --- University of New Mexico men's tennis student-athlete Max Jones won the final match of the qualifying round on Monday to enter into the main draw. The next round could begin either tomorrow or Wednesday and will count towards world ranking points.
At the NMSU Fall Invite this past weekend, Miles Bugby had a first round bye before winning in both the Round of 16 the quarterfinals. Stefan McKinney of New Mexico State University retired Bugby in the semifinal round (1-6, 4-1). Both Joe Wood and Derek Lynch lost in the round of 32 to enter into the consolidation round. Wood won his first consolidation match before Jeff Pfeifer, also from NMSU, beat Wood in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). Derek Lynch made it all the way to finals before meeting with Pfeifer and losing in three sets as well (2-6, 3-6, 6-0). In doubles, Wood and Bugby paired up to advance to the quarterfinal round. Lynch teamed up Northern Arizona's David Flodberg to also advance to the quarterfinals.
The Lobos men's team has a break before traveling to Tulsa, Okla., for the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Tournament. Pre-qualifying rounds begin on Sept. 28.
