NORMAN, OKLA. - The Lobos struggled on offense early and couldn't fully capitalize on a ninth-inning rally, eventually losing to the No. 8 Oklahoma 6-2 Friday night.

UNM took all sorts of momentum heading into the series with the Sooners, but it didn't translate on the offensive side of the plate. Oklahoma's starting pitcher Michael Rocha had a great performance, surrendering two runs on seven hits while striking out three.

The Sooners struck first with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first run came by way of an error made by Lobos' starting catcher Mitchell Garver. Garver had a muffed throw while attempting to gun down a runner who was trying to steal second. Leadoff hitter Erik Ross, who was on third at the time, took advantage of the throw and sped home. The second run came off an RBI groundout from Oklahoma's Tyler Ogle, giving the Sooners an early 2-0 advantage.

UNM surrendered another run to Oklahoma in the fourth, as Sooners' sophomore left fielder Max White roped an RBI single into left. At the end of four, the Lobos trailed the Sooners by a score of 3-0.

Sooners' starting pitcher Michael Rocha didn't allow a hit to the Lobos until the sixth inning, when Lobos' left fielder Logan Lippert broke up Rocha's perfect game with a single to left. That was all the Lobos would get in the inning, however, as Rocha sat down the next two batters.

UNM's starter Rudy Jaramillo surrendered his fourth run of the game, second earned, in the bottom of the seventh to give the Sooners a 4-0 lead. Oklahoma's Garrett Buechele belted an RBI double down the left field line to bring home Ricky Eisenberg. The Sooners added two more in the eighth to extend their lead to 6-0 over the Lobos.

The Lobos picked up a pair of hits in both the seventh and eighth innings, but could not capitalize as they continued to remain shutout by the Sooners.

With one last chance left in the ninth, the Lobos put together a little rally. Oklahoma's Rocha began the inning by hitting UNM's DJ Peterson with a pitch. Garver then smacked a double to right field, pushing Peterson to third. Lobos' third baseman Quay Grant finally put UNM on the board with an RBI groundout to second base. Junior Ben Woodchick stepped to the plate next and sent an RBI single to right, closing the Sooners' lead to 6-2. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Oklahoma's Rocha was finally able to get the third out of the inning to finish his complete game.

The Lobos drop to 16-33 on the year with the Loss.

Tomorrow the Lobos will battle the Sooners in a double header, with the first game slated for a 2 p.m. MT start, and the second game to follow thirty minutes after the completion of the first.
