Giddens Named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press

University of New Mexico senior J.R. Giddens was named honorable mention All-American today by the Associated Press. Giddens, a 6-5 guard from Oklahoma City, Okla., led UNM to a 24-9 record this season and was named the Mountain West Conference co-Player of the Year.

Giddens averaged 16.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg during the 2007-08 season, becoming the first guard to lead the MWC in rebounding. He also led the MWC in scoring (18.3) and rebounds (8.3) during the 16-game league schedule.

"I would like to again thank my teammates and coaches, because without them, there is no way I would be getting this type of recognition," stated Giddens. "We had a phenomenal year and it was a total team effort. All of the honors I get are honors for the University of New Mexico and Lobo Basketball."

Giddens is also set to compete in the 2008 State Farm College Slam Dunk Contest on Thursday, April 3. The event kicks off the Final Four weekend and is set to take place at the Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. The event will air on ESPN, beginning at 7 p.m. (M.D.T.).

Giddens is one of eight competitors in the slam dunk portion of the event. Joining him are James Gist of Maryland, Deron Washington of Virginia Tech, Patrick Ewing Jr., of Georgetown, Brian Randle of Illinois, Joey Dorsey of Memphis, Will Bullard of Texas A&M - Corpus Cristi and Sonny Weems of Arkansas.

"I am very excited about this opportunity," continued Giddens. "This is another chance for me to help get some national exposure for the University of New Mexico and Lobo basketball."
