ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomores Zaneta Wyne and Amanda Collins were selected to the Mountain West Conference All-Tournament Team as announced by the conference office. The awards are the first for both student-athletes and are the first selections for New Mexico since 2006.
"This is a tremendous award for both of them," said head coach Kit Vela. "They both played well both games of the tournament. Amanda is our workhorse in the midfield. She is a hard working, team effort type of player. Zaneta Was really good in both games. She scored a great goal against a very good Wyoming team. It's a tribute to both of them and I'm happy they were both applauded for their efforts."
Wyne scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Wyoming on Nov. 4 in the opening round of the tournament. The Laguna Nigel, Calif., native put away a header in the 46th minute and ushered the Lobos into the semifinal round.
Collins is a steadfast defensive mid who was a vital part of the defense this year. From her position Collins shut down the opposing attack and transitioned the Lobo offense into attack mode.
The Lobos recorded one of the best seasons in school history and posted a record of 13-5-3. New Mexico narrowly missed an at-large bit to the NCAA Women's College Cup and finished with an RPI of 78.
"It's the first time in the history of the program," said Vela. "We really thought that we were going to have to win the tournament to get a look. But everything said and done we had 13 wins and we played well against great opponents. To be considered for an at-large bid was a tribute to what these girls did this season. The team did everything that was asked of them against top-notch opponents and I think that bodes well for the future."
