The University of New Mexico softball team gets swept by UTEP, losing both games in the doubleheader. The Lobos lost the first game 12-2 and the second game 7-3, Tuesday afternoon at Lobo Field. Kerry Hodgins came on in relief to pitch in her first game this season for the Lobos. New Mexico will hit the road to play Utah on Thursday and BYU on Friday and Saturday.
UTEP scored seven runs in the top of the second inning with two outs to take an early 7-0 lead in the first game of the doubleheader. The Miners scored their runs on a bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch and three hits.
New Mexico scored its two runs in bottom of the third inning. Hodgins led off the inning with a walk. Sheryl Guillermo advanced Hodgins with a ground out to the pitcher. Cristin Anderson singled through the left side and advanced on the throw to get runners on second and third. Jessica Garcia then singled down the left field line to score both runners.
Hodgins came in to pitch in relief in the start of the fifth inning to only give up three earned runs. This was the first game the sophomore has pitched in this season. Hodgins pitched during the 2009 season and had a 4-2 record in 63.1 innings pitched.
UTEP scored a run in the top of the third, a run in the fifth, and three more runs in the seventh to end the game 12-2. Stacie Townsend received the win in the circle for the Miners to improve to 25-12 on the season.
In the second game the Miners scored two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-0.
The Lobos stopped an attempted shutout by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game 7-3. Guillermo singled to left field with one out to start off the Lobos. Hodgins then walked to get runners on first and second. Anderson singled up the middle to score Guillermo for the first run. Stefanie Carramusa singled to left field to load the bases. Garcia reached on a fielder's choice with Hodgins getting out at home by the catcher. The catcher then threw wild ball into foul territory in an attempted double play at first. The right field retrieved the ball and threw another wild ball into the opposite foul territory to allow the Lobos to score Anderson and Carramusa.
Cristin Anderson went 2-for-7 on the day with two runs and an RBI for the Lobos. Garcia combined for two RBIs on two hits on the day. Carramusa, Hodgins, and Guillermo each had a run for the Lobos during the day.
Chelsea Troupe led UTEP at the plate combining 5-for-9 with three runs, four RBIs, a double, a triple, and a home run. Kia Moore went 3-for-8 on the day with three runs, four RBIs, and a double. Courtney Auger (2-2) received the win in game two for the Miners. With the wins, UTEP improved to 30-18 on the season.
Kaela DeBroeck (5-16) received the loss for the Lobos in the circle in game one. Samantha Gatson received the loss in game two for the Lobos. New Mexico falls to 10-31 on the season. For more information regarding Lobo softball go to GoLobos.com.
