At the end of day two in the Balloon Fiesta Invitational, the New Mexico men's tennis team's chance at winning the singles and doubles titles has ended. In the main flight, the College of Santa Fe's Gerald Bremond, seeded first in the tournament, will play third seeded Danilo Zivanovic of New Mexico State. Denver will win the doubles crown with Nejc Smole and Viktor Zetterholm taking on teammates Hans Peter Gaber and Niki Popovic.
To start the day, senior Jasmin Hodzic was the only Lobo in contention for the main flight singles crown. He won his first match of the day in the quarterfinal round over fourth seeded Tyler McClung of Air Force, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. Up against No. 1 seeded Bremond in the semifinals, Hodiz won the first set 4-6 while Bremond picked up the second set 7-6. Hodzic couldn't continue as he retired with an injury before the final set started.
Sophomore Henry Gers advances to the semifinal round in the main flight consolation bracket tomorrow. Gers picked up key wins over New Mexico Military Institute's Sawmynaden (7-5, 6-3) and Air Force's Trevor Johnson (6-2, 4-6, 6-4). Classmate Nick Ames won his first match of the day, 6-2, 4-0 over Chris Dong of Air Force, who retired with an injury.
In doubles, all three of New Mexico's teams were eliminated in their first match of the day. Sophomore Nick Ames and freshman Robert Grzeskowiak fell 8-3 to Smole and Zetterholm. Gers and classmate Eric Conklin were edged out 9-7 by Gaber and Popovic. The injured duo of Hodzic and freshman Hiroud Akhavan fell to Sawmunaden and David Detudamo, 8-6.
Senior Divan Coetzee, competing in the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. fell to Mountain West conference foe Erik Nyman of BYU, 7-5, 6-1 in the consolation quarterfinals.
