ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore Jeanne Fairchild led the Lobo volleyball team (4-5) to their third straight win, setting New Mexico up to win the Comcast Lobo Invitational. With the 3-0 shutout over Dartmouth (0-2), UNM and Cal State Fullerton will play for the tournament title tonight at 7 p.m.
Fairchild put down seven kills in game one en route to the Lobos' 30-21 win. Dartmouth trailed by just two at 14-12 when Fairchild connected on a pass from sophomore Sarah Kwasigroch, sparking a 10-5 UNM run.
In game two, Fairchild started the team with a 3-0 run. Five straight Big Green errors led to an 8-2 Lobo lead. Dartmouth evened the match at 10 and traded points with New Mexico to 15-15. Junior Jennifer Heasty served up three points, giving UNM the lead it needed to go on to the 30-24 win.
Game three began with both teams battling for more than a two point advantage. At 7-7, Fairchild recorded a kill and a block to start the Lobos' 6-1 run. Dartmouth rallied to within two at 17-15 when New Mexico strung together a 13-2 run, going on to the 30-17 win.
For the match, the Lobos hit .356 (40K-8E-90TA) while holding the Big Green to an .048 (40K-34E-124TA) percentage. Fairchild hit .458 on 14 kills and three errors on 24 attacks. She also recorded six digs and three blocks. Kwasigroch handed out 33 assists and eight digs.
