Recap |  Box Score |  Notes |  Jan. 28, 2009 - Lobo Basketball vs. Colorado State

New Mexico head coach Steve Alford

Opening statement:
"It wasn't a crazy halftime. It was about maturing as a basketball team when we had a half when we couldn't make a basket. UTEP was the same way, except with UTEP we came out and couldn't make a basket the second 20 and gave them everything. I said 'hey this might be a night where we can't make anything, so let's do a good job defensively.'

I thought we have really been maturing defensively; we've been doing a great job on the defensive end.

You go 8 for 15 (free throws) in one half, we didn't change the height of the basket or anything, the same guys were shooting free throws and we go 17 for 17 the second half We hold them to two offensive rebounds, a season low in points, forced 20 turnovers; we were really good defensively."

Playing against a possible trap game:
"We were able to sustain a lead. It wasn't a big lead in the first half but we were able to sustain a lead. They've been a team all year that has had some pretty good runs. I don't think they had any run of substance against us that mattered tonight and I think that was big."

On the UNM seniors:
"Tony has been big for us all year. The big thing was he made free throws. Tony has been guarding very well. I just thought it was a good defensive effort by the team. Daniel did a really nice job in the second half. I'm really happy for (Chad) Toppert. He didn't have a particular good shooting night but he didn't stop shooting."

Colorado State head coach Tim Miles

Overall thoughts on game
"I thought New Mexico did an excellent job, especially in the second half. They ran themselves well. They got fouled and made their foul shots."

I thought they hurt us on the offensive glass, too. It seems like their offensive rebounds were timely. And when we made a mistake they made us pay. That's what good teams do, that's what veteran teams do."

Playing in The Pit
"It's great. It's fun. Snake and the boys will get you going. It's a great environment. It's one of the best in the country. I look forward to a better day when we maybe come out of here with a win, and they're screaming at me. Until then, I guess we just have to antagonize more."
