The New Mexico softball team had another full day of wins at Lobo Field, defeating South Dakota State in a doubleheader on the second day of the Airport University Inn Lobo Classic. The Lobos (15-12) used only five innings in the first game to capture a convincing 10-1 victory over the Jackrabbits (12-11). In the second game, New Mexico came from behind to earn a 5-3 win. The Lobos are currently cruising on a 13-game winning streak and are also 10-0 at home.
The Lobo Classic will conclude tomorrow (Sunday, March 19) with one match between New Mexico and Texas Tech (10-19), starting at noon.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior shortstop Cassie Chavez hit two triples for five RBI to lead New Mexico to a 10-1 victory in five innings over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
The Lobos had a big second inning that saw seven runs on six hits. Chavez drove in three of the runs on a triple to left center while Jennifer Deitrich, Ryanne Hodgins, Samantha Hughes and Lindsey Elcess each had an RBI to give the Lobos the 7-0 lead early in the game.
The Jackrabbits scored their one run in the top of the third inning when Erin Jones hit a single RBI up the middle.
In the bottom of the third, New Mexico pulled away even further with three more runs. Chavez nabbed her second triple, driving in two runs for the Lobos. Earlier in the inning, Hughes singled to left field to score Ashley Allen.
Chavez went 3-for-3 in the game and the triples were her first two of the season. Hughes was 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI while Rubalcava went 2-for-2.
Senior Katie Gregg grabbed her sixth win this season, moving her overall record to 6-3. She held the Jackrabbits to one run on just three hits in five innings of work.
South Dakota State's Kim Westendorf took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits over four innings of work in the circle.

Chavez stepped up in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single to tie the game, while Young came through in the fifth inning with a scorching double down the left field line that allowed the winning run to score.
Chavez would come back in the bottom of the sixth inning to hit a solo shot to left center to wrap up New Mexico's scoring in the game and mark her third season home run.
South Dakota State had the 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning after scoring two runs in the first and one in the second. New Mexico scored one run in the second and one in the third before getting the tying run in the fourth.
Freshman hurler Jen Mendenhall (5-7) captured the win after relieving starter Caley Peterson in the third inning. Mendenhall shutdown the Jackrabbits, holding their bats to three hits and no runs in five innings pitched.
Losing pitcher for South Dakota State was Jenna Marston (6-4) as she allowed five runs on 13 hits over six innings of work in the circle.
Chavez went 3-for-3 at the plate for New Mexico and had two RBI while Young went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Kristina Schmallen and Jennifer Deitrich also helped New Mexico on the offensive end, both going 2-for-2 with one RBI.
