The 10th ranked University of New Mexico men's soccer team dropped its final exhibition match 1-0 to No. 8 Indiana at the National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind., today. IU's Kevin Noschang scored the only goal of the game in the 23th minute, handing the Lobos their second loss in as many games at the Fort Wayne Sport Club.
The first half started slowly with neither team getting off a shot in the first 15 minutes. Indiana finally broke the ice in the 29th minute when Brian Ackley fired a shot wide of the net. That set off a string of attempts by the Hooisers that was highlighted by Noschang's goal. He chipped a pass from teammate Daniel Kelly that sailed over the hands of Lobo keeper Mike Graczyk, clipped the cross bar and landed in the back of the net.
The Lobos were held without a shot until the 36th minute when junior Chris Wright's header off a corner kick sailed over the net. New Mexico did manage to earn three corner kicks, but were outshot 6-3 in the opening period.
The Lobos looked more relaxed in the second period, keeping pace with Indiana in shots and corners. Each team got off six tries and both squads earned three more corners in the second half. However, New Mexico was unable to score the equalizing goal. The Lobos did not put a shot on goal for the entire 90 minutes of the match.
UNM now turn its attention to the season opener next weekend in the Westfield Cup hosted by the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The Lobos take on the host Zips on Friday, Aug. 31, at 5:30 p.m. (M.D.T.) and Hartwick on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 10:00 a.m. New Mexico's home opener is set for Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) at the UNM Soccer Complex when the Lobos face Loyola Marymount in the opening night of the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational.
