Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - With one out and three runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Sabrina Sandberg reached on a error by Syracuse shortstop Alexis Switenko, allowing freshman Amy Ray to score the game-winning run as New Mexico beat Syracuse, 4-3 at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament hosted by Arizona State.

The Lobos got on the board first thanks to a solo shot to center field by freshman Robyn Hutson to start the second inning. Two batters later, Sandberg doubled to left and then advanced to third as freshman Ryanne Hodgins reached on a fielder's choice. Sandberg then scored off of sophomore Stephanie Kennedy's grounder to second.

Syracuse chipped away at the Lobos lead, getting one run back in the fourth. The Orangemen tied things up and then took a 3-2 lead in the sixth as Tiffany Robinson and Lindsay Van Gorden scored off of Cassie Morales' sacrifice bunt and Nikki Lincoln's sacrifice fly, respectively.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sanberg got things started for the Lobos with her double down the left field line. Senior Jen Sena then layed down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Sandberg to third. Kennedy, stepping to the plate with two outs, tied the score with her RBI single to right center.

After pitching a scoreless inning in the top of the seventh, sophomore Iraina Ogas started the bottom of the seventh with a single to left center. New Mexico head coach Kim Newbern then inserted Ray to pinch run for Ogas. Syracuse then changed pitchers for junior Cassie Chavez. Chavez was out at first but did pick up the sacrifice bunt, advancing Ray to second. Hutson was then hit by a pitch, bringing up junior Kelli Edelbrock who was pinch hitting for senior Ora Hensley. Hutson and Ray advanced on a wild pitch before Edelbrock eventually walked. That set up the bases loaded for Sanberg to reach on the error, scoring Ray and ending the game.

Overall, Ogas (1-2) pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, three runs and one walk while striking out five. Both Kennedy and Sandberg were 2-4 on the day.

New Mexico improved to 5-5 overall and 3-2 at the Fiest Bowl Tournament.

The Lobos return to action next weekend when they compete at the North Texas/Betlin Round-Up. They will play Southwest Missouri State at 10 a.m. and Texas-Arlington at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, Wichita State at 3 p.m. and North Texas at 5 p.m. on Feb. 21, and Creighton at 10 a.m. and Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. on Feb. 22.
