Mountain West Spring 2013 Academic All-Conference Release

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Even a month and a half after the 2012-13 school year has ended, the University of New Mexico athletic department still is producing conference championships.

The Mountain West on Thursday released its Spring 2013 Academic All-Mountain West Team. Of the 729 student-athletes honored, UNM contributed the most of any school in the conference with 111.

The 111 added to the 52 Lobo student-athletes that made the Fall 2012 Academic All-MW Team gives the school 163 Academic All-MW selections for the school year, also the most of any school in the conference. Boise State had 162 for the school year and 106 for the spring.

It's the first time UNM led the MW in academic all-conference selections in a school year.

UNM led the league in women's soccer, baseball, women's basketball, women's golf, softball, swimming and diving, men's tennis and women's tennis.

"This is just more evidence of the outstanding contributions our student-athletes have made to the University of New Mexico in the classroom, as well as to their respective athletic programs and the community," Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs said. "The way our student-athletes are able to juggle their academic and athletic schedules to achieve such success on both fronts is a source of pride for our entire athletic department. Our coaches deserve credit for continuing to stress academics, and our Office of Student Athletic Success and faculty and staff on campus also deserve recognition for their tremendous support."

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term while maintaining a 3.0 or better grade point average and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.

The 111 student-athlete honorees marks the second highest number UNM has had since the 2002-03 season. The Lobos placed 117 athletes on the academic team in the spring of 2009.

The 2013 Mountain West champion men's baseball team set a program record with 16 players earning Academic All-MW accolades.

"It speaks volumes about what we do here at the University of New Mexico," baseball coach Ray Birmingham said. "We put what's important first here. We've won the community service award, we have a record number of academic all-conference (honorees), we've been ranked nationally and we're winning conference championships. Every aspect of UNM baseball speaks of excellence. I'm as proud of this as I am of us winning any championship."

The swimming and diving team produced the most Academic All-MW selections among the Lobo programs, tying a team high mark with 22 members on the team that it set last season.

The women's track and field team had 18 members on the academic team, and the women's basketball and softball teams also were in double figures with 10. The softball figure tied for the most in 11 years, and the women's basketball result tied for the second most during that span.

The eight selections on the men's tennis team also set a program high mark during the last 11 years. All six women's golfers on the UNM roster earned Academic All-MW honors, and that tied for the most since 2002-03.
