Parkes Named MWC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Colorado Springs, Colo. - University of New Mexico senior Johnny Parkes was named the Mountain West Conference men's tennis player of the week today.

Parkes paced the Lobos to a weekend sweep over No. 44 Indiana and No. 75 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, going 4-0. Playing at the No. 1 slot in singles, Parkes downed Indiana's Lachlan Ferguson (6-1, 6-4) and Corpus Christi's Mikhail Pavlov (6-4, 6-2). In doubles play, Parkes teamed with Miles Bugby for victories over Indiana's Ferguson and Guy Kubi (8-4) and Texas A&M-C.C.'s Pavlov and Dmitry Novikov (8-5).

Parkes, who is also a three-time all-MWC honoree, ranks ninth on the all-time UNM singles list with a career record of 75-40. In doubles play, he sits at 16th with a 61-41 record.

Parkes has collected only one other MWC Player of the Week honor, on March 26, 2008.

The Lobos square off with No. 28 Virginia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 31 at noon with the potential to play No. 1 Ohio State at the ITA Team Indoor Tournament.
