    TUCSON, Ariz. --- The University of New Mexico men's golf team is in ninth place after shooting a 27-over-par 311 in Thursday's first round at the Mountain West Conference Championship Tournament, hosted by the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Resort.

    Freshman John Catlin leads the Lobos heading into Friday's second round, having shot a 5-over 76 to tie for 27th place. Travis Ross carded a 6-over 77 and is tied for 32nd. Senior Nick Geyer is tied for 36th after shooting a 7-over 78, while junior Tom Carlson and Freshman Ryan Gay shot a 9-over 80 and 11-over 82, respectively. Carlson is tied for 41st while Gay sits alone at 44th.

    Colorado State leads the team competition, having shot a 1-under 283. San Diego State is in second with a 1-over 285, followed by Brigham Young (+3, 287), UNLV (+6, 290), TCU (+9, 293), Wyoming (+19, 303), Utah (+20, 304) and Air Force (+21, 305).

    Individually, the Rams' Zahkai Brown and Ryan Peterson, BYU's Esteban Calisto and UNLV's Derek Ernst are all tied for the lead with 1-under 70s. A pack of seven golfers are tied for fifth place.

    The Lobos resume play Friday morning, with Gay teeing off at 8 a.m. MT, followed by Carlson at 8:10, Geyer at 8:20, Ross at 8:30 and Catlin at 8:40.
