ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Senior John Hesketh put together a solid outing on the mound and the Lobos backed him up with 15 runs and 17 hits to beat Binghamton, 15-3, Friday night at Isotopes Park. The University of New Mexico baseball team improved to 10-2 on the season, while Binghamton dropped to 1-3.
The visiting Bearcats scored first with a two-out home run by left fielder Joe Charron, 1-0 in the top of the first inning. But Hesketh got the next batter, Corey Taylor, to strikeout swinging and stop any BU momentum.
The Lobos put runs on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Hesketh (3-0) only allowed eight base runners over the next seven innings to keep Binghamton in check. The lefty from Langley, British Columbia, ended up throwing eight innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out five batters. Brandon Hewett came in for the ninth inning to close out the game.
Offensively, UNM pounded away at the Bearcats. Dane Hamilton, Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Adam Courcha each had three hits and scored a combined seven runs with five RBI for the Lobos. Hamilton's hits were all doubles, while Cavazos-Galvez ended up a home run short of the cycle. Mike Brownstein led the Lobos with four runs scored, while Max Willett led the way with five RBI, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to put the Lobos ahead, 7-2.
New Mexico returns to action on Saturday, March 7, with a doubleheader against Binghamton. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Isotopes Park. Live action can be heard on KDEF 1150 AM.
