University of New Mexico men's basketball senior J.R. Giddens was named Mountain West Conference co-Player of the Week today. Giddens led UNM to four wins last week on his way to earning his second career MWC Player of the Week honor.
A 6-foot-5 guard from Oklahoma City, Okla., Giddens led the Lobos to a 4-0 home record on the week, including being named Most Valuable Player of the Basketball Travelers Invitational. He began the week with a double-double in UNM's 92-57 win over Eastern Washington, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Giddens also tallied three assists and three steals vs. the Eagles.
Giddens opened tournament play scoring 16 points while pulling in eight rebounds and dishing out two assists in a 88-57 win over Presbyterian. Giddens followed with his second double-double of the week, an 11-point, 12-rebound effort in the Lobos' 81-54 victory over St. Bonaventure. He concluded the tournament with a season-high 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor as New Mexico secured the Basketball Travelers Invitational title with an 86-58 win over Loyola Marymount. On the week, Giddens averaged 15.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 54.8 percent from the field (23-for-42), including a 44.4 percent efficiency from beyond the arc (4-for-9).
