ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Senior Bobby Moore became the first Lobo pitcher to earn his fourth win of the season as the University of New Mexico beat Air Force, 17-2 on Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The Lobos improve to 16-3 overall and 3-0 in Mountain West Conference action, while Air Force dropped to 5-9 and 0-3.
Moore (4-0) threw six innings of scoreless ball as his teammates built a 16-0 lead. Moore gave up only four hits and three walks while striking out three to start the game. Freshman Rudy Jaramillo threw the seventh inning, giving up the only Air Force runs of the game. Lobo newcomers Gabe Aguilar and Kenny Toves threw the final two innings, holding the Falcons scoreless.
The Lobos manufactured five runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. Atkinson hit a bases-clearing double to put UNM ahead, 5-0, then scored on a Max Willett single.
UNM's big inning came in the fourth with eight runs to take a 15-0 lead. Shortstop Daniel Gonzalez hit his first home run as a Lobo, a three-run shot, to put New Mexico ahead 13-0.
Atkinson scored his fourth run of the game in the fifth on a single by Willett to put the lead at 16-0.
Rafael Neda pinch hit in the seventh inning, a solo home run, for the final total, 17-2.
UNM came up with 23 hits led by Atkinson and Dane Hamilton with four hits each. Brownstein, Willett and Gonzalez finished with three each, while Howard finished with two.
New Mexico heads to College Station, Texas, for a two-game series with nationally-ranked Texas A&M on March 17 and 18. Game time both days is 5:30 p.m. (MDT).
