LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Except for the third set, it was a tight match all the way as the University of New Mexico volleyball team beat UNLV, 3-2 (24-26, 29-27, 13-25, 28-26, 15-12). The win improves the Lobos record to 19-8 overall and 10-5 in Mountain West Conference action.
In the first set, the Lobos blew a five-point lead at 13-8 and saw the set tied 11 times. The final tie came at 24-24 on a big block by Rose Morris. Back-to-back kills by the Rebels gave them the win, 26-24.
The second set had poor hitting by both teams at .020. UNLV took a 4-1 lead, but the Lobos caught back up on a kill by Anna Lehne and several Rebel attack errors, 4-4. Neither team took bigger than a three-point lead, 22-19. UNLV picked up three points to even things at 22. From that point forward the teams stayed tied every point to 27. A kill by Morris and an error by UNLV gave UNM the 29-27 win and tied the set at 1-1.
After the intermission, UNLV took immediate control in the third set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead that multiplied through the set to a 25-13 win and a UNLV 2-1 lead. The Rebels out-hit New Mexico .308 to -.091 in the set.
The fourth set looked more like the first two with UNLV never getting a lead bigger than four, including 24-20. But a Rebel error, an ace by Lisa Meeter and two double blocks by Jade Michaelsen and Anna Lehne tied the set at 24-24. The teams swapped points to 26-26, then a kill by Taylor Hadfield and an ace by Michaelsen sent the match into the fifth set, 28-26.
The Lobos got to the eight-point mark first on one of Lehne's team-high 14 kills, 8-7. After a UNLV point, Lehne came up with back-to-back kills to push UNM's lead to 10-8. A kill by Michaelsen and a Rebel error put the lead at 12-8 before UNLV called timeout. After the break, back-to-back kills and a Lobo error put UNLV within one, 12-11. UNM called timeout to settle down. Morris came out of the break with three big kills for the 15-12 win.
In addition to Lehne's 14 kills and seven blocks, Hadfield finished with 13 kills and two blocks, while Morris had 11 kills and five blocks. Meeter led the Lobos with three service aces and 17 digs from the back row, followed by Allison Buck with 16 digs. Michaelsen, the setter, recorded 44 assists, four kills, six digs, two aces and five blocks for UNM.
The Lobos return to action on Friday, Nov. 20 at TCU. Game time is set for 6 p.m. (MT) with the match being tape delayed on The Mtn. at 7:30 p.m. (MT).
