SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The New Mexico volleyball team fell to San Diego State in three games (30-21, 30-25, 30-22) Friday night (Oct. 10) at Peterson Gym. The Lobos now stand at 3-14 (0-4 MWC) for the season, while the Aztecs improved 11-8 (2-2 MWC).
Junior Adah Burke (Las Cruces, N.M.) produced a career-high 16 digs for the Lobos, while freshman Georgia Whitson (Taos, N.M.) added nine kills and three service aces. Junior Monica Meihack (Fallon, Nev.) tallied 27 assists and senior Anna Reines (Big Lake, Minn.) chipped in 10 kills.
The Aztecs came out quickly in game one, hitting .424 while limiting the Lobos to a .195 attack percentage. Zlanti Anguelova and Aspen McPartland paced SDSU with five kills apiece while Reines and Whitson had four each for UNM. Megan Schauermann contributed three blocks as the Aztecs totaled three team blocks to 1.5 for the Lobos.
In game two, New Mexico took control early, running out to a 7-4 lead. SDSU fought back to knot the score at 15, then ran off six straight points paced by three kills from Schauermann. Although UNM came back to get within two points at 25-23, the Aztecs pulled away on a pair of kills by McPartland to wrap up the game.
The third game was close in the early stages as the teams fought back and forth to an 11-11 tie. The Aztecs then scored five consecutive points and never looked back en route to the 12-point win. Anguelova had a game-high six kills while McPartland contributed five. Reines led New Mexico, tallying five of her team-high 10 kills in the final game.
UNM returns to action Saturday night (Oct. 11) to face UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. The match begins at 7 p.m. PT.
