ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer hosts Wyoming and TCU this weekend to open Mountain West Conference action. The Lobos take on the Cowgirls Friday at 7 p.m. inside the UNM Soccer Complex and conclude the weekend at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Horned Frogs. UNM is 6-2-2 overall this season and off to its best start since the 1997 season. Friday marks the first time since the 2004 season that UNM has opened conference play at home and the first time Wyoming has come to Albuquerque since 2003.
UNM was idle last week and is coming off back-to-back victories over Arizona State (Sept. 25) and Northern Arizona (Sept. 30). The Lobos have been led by the play of freshman Alexis Ball, who has taken charge offensively. Ball has scored a goal in four consecutive games including three game-winners.
The Lobos are 6-4-2 all-time in conference openers and 2-4-2 in MWC home openers. The Lobos have battled Wyoming three times in MWC home openers and have a 0-2-1 record against the Cowgirls. However, Kit Vela is 3-1-2 in conference openers while at UNM.
UNM tied Wyoming and TCU last season in two key MWC games. The Lobos were 6-4-1 in non-conference action before tying the Cowgirls (1-1) and the Horned Frogs (0-0). The back-to-back ties triggered a 1-2-2 start to the MWC season for New Mexico before they defeated San Diego State, 2-0, at home. UNM finished the 2006 season with a 2-2-3 record after winning two of its final three games.
Wyoming is 5-6 this season and has lost three of its last four matches. The Cowgirls are coming off a 3-0 victory over Northern Colorado on Oct. 5 in Laramie, Wyo. Wyoming has scored 17 goals in 11 games and is led by Tamika Wilson and Amanda Lathrop. Wilson leads the team with six goals and two assist while Lathrop has recorded five goals. The Cowgirls have two shutouts on the year and have used two goalkeepers.
The Horned Frogs are 6-6 on the year and 1-0 in the MWC. TCU defeated Air Force, 3-1, on Oct. 6 and has a three game winning streak heading into the weekend. Away from Texas, TCU is 1-4 but has played two ranked opponents on the road. Jackie Torda leads the team with nine goals.
