ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico head women's basketball coach Don Flanagan has announced that Whitney Johnson signed a national letter of intent for the 2011-12 season. Johnson is a 6-2 senior post at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah. She is expected to bring great athleticism in the post position next year for the Lobos. Johnson is New Mexico's first signee for the 2011-12 season.
"She is very athletic and is going to give us good quickness inside and is very good around the rim," said Flanagan. "She has the ability to defend down low and has a good 15-foot shot."
Johnson is a two-sport athlete, playing volleyball and basketball for the Knights. Johnson was recruited in both sports, but was more passionate about basketball.
As a junior, Johnson was named second-team All-State and first-team all-Region in basketball for the 2009-10 season. During her junior year, Johnson averaged 17.5 points and 9.8 rebounds a game. In 2008-09, she was also named first-team All-Region in basketball.
"She is very enthusiastic and is going to give us a lot of athleticism in the post," said Flanagan.
In volleyball, Johnson was named honorable mention All-State as a sophomore. She was named third-team All-State in 2009. In 2010, Johnson was named to the All-Tournament team after helping her team win the 5A State Championship with seven kills and five blocks.
