ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--The University of New Mexico softball team handily shut out Luna Community College yesterday afternoon, dropping the Rough Riders 5-0 in the first game of a doubleheader and mercy-ruling them 10-0 in the second.
Sophomore Danielle Castro led the Lobos in the first game, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Sophomore Shenise Cox knocked in two runs on one hit in three at-bats. New Mexico scored one run in the second inning, three in the third, and one in the sixth on six hits against Luna pitcher Jenelle Klassen. Freshman Kaela DeBroeck pitched a complete game and picked up the win for New Mexico. DeBroeck gave up only two hits and struck out four.
Several Lobos contributed at the plate in the second game, led by sophomores Kerry Hodgins and Jessica Garcia, who went 4-4 and 2-3 at the plate, respectively. Hodgins knocked in one run while Garcia had three RBI. Senior Cristin Anderson was 2-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Freshmen Jordyn Bledsoe and Stefanie Carramusa were both 2-2, and Bledsoe had one RBI.
Freshman pitcher Kari Gutierrez took the win, pitching six innings before the mercy rule took effect. Gutierrez struck out six batters and scattered three hits. Five pitchers took the mound for Luna and gave up 16 collective hits. The Lobos scored two runs in the first, second, and fourth innings, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
Yesterday's fall games were New Mexico's last at Lobo Field until the 2010 season. The Lobos will wrap up the fall season with a trip to the Arizona Fall Classic in Tucson, Ariz. this weekend, Oct. 10-11. The Lobos will play two games on Saturday, facing Cypress College at 3 p.m. and taking on the host Arizona Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. New Mexico will play Central Arizona a 9 a.m. and Arizona Western at 11 a.m. on Sunday. All games will be played at Hillenbrand Stadium.
