Lobo sophomore Kyle Nielsen shot a 1-under 70 to take the outright lead after two rounds of the 36th Arizona State University Thunderbird Invitational being played at the Karsten Golf Course (par-71, 7,057 yards) in Tempe, Ariz.

Nielsen, who had a career-best 66 in the first round, stands at 6-under 136. He enters Sunday's final round with a 1-shot lead over Colorado State's Zen Brown.

Nielsen could be the second straight Lobo to win the Thunderbird Invitational. Charlie Beljan was the medalist last year with a 15-under 201.

Nielsen got to 3-under on his round today after a birdie at No. 14, but lost two shots following consecutive bogeys at 15 and 16.

In the team standings, the Lobos fell to 12th place in the 16-team field with a two-day total of 587. Host Arizona State continues to lead at 558.

Lobo junior Steve Saunders shot 73 and is at 5-over 147. Jon Sauer and Jacob Lestishen are at 10-over 152 while Brandon Putnam is at 167.

Final round action begins Sunday at 7 a.m. MDT. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
