UNM Head Coach Mike Locksley Opening Statement
"I thought overall the atmosphere for this game was great. It was great to see our fans come out and support our players. I thought our players played with great effort for four quarters, which is something that we are going to need to be able to do to be the type of team we want to be.
"When you look at the way this game transpired I thought we played well enough on defense to win the game. Colorado State ran the ball for over 300 yards against us last year and this year we held them to just over 100 yards. I thought we tackled well on defense and I thought we played great team defense. On the kicking game I thought we were much improved and limited the big plays.
"The one side of the ball that I didn't think showed up was the offensive side of the ball. I thought we moved the ball pretty well throughout the course of the game, but we had way too many penalties and obviously when you fumble the ball three times, twice inside your own red zone, you don't give yourself a chance to win.
"That being said, all of those things are correctible for us if this team continues to play with the effort that we played with. When you look at a lot of the mistakes made today, they were made by young players; that is part of the maturation process. Putting the ball over the goal line, missing some signals, a penalty at the end of the game--those are all things that we can get correct. I expect to get it corrected and I expect us to show up on Monday. We are not hanging our heads. We are going to build on some of the positive things that we've done in this game. We are going to find a way to prepare our team for a tough challenge going down to Little Rock."
Sophomore Linebacker Dallas Bollema
On leading the game statistically, but still taking the loss...
"We came out with a good game plan and the coaches prepared us well, but tonight we beat ourselves and that's something we have to fix come Monday."
On team morale...
"It's tough because we were all excited and the momentum was going our way, but we ended up making mistakes at the end and again, we beat ourselves."
On how the defense performed tonight...
"I thought we did well and we were all flying around really well, and the coaches had a good game plan set up for us. We didn't see anything that we weren't prepared for. We were ready for what was coming our way, and hopefully we'll keep doing that for the remainder of the season."
Sophomore Quarterback Tarean Austin
On the last New Mexico fumble...
"I was trying to step up in the pocket and make a big play. I should've tucked the ball sooner."
In the first half you were getting outside a lot and throwing the ball, what did Colorado State do differently in the second half?
"They didn't do anything different and we didn't change the game plan either. We just have to go out there and make plays and execute what the coaches are telling us to do."
On his first game...
"I think I could have done a lot better. In every area and by being a better leader."
On not capitalizing on opportunities...
"We made bad mistakes that set us back and brought us down. It takes both the little things and the big things to fall into place."
On losing a close game and how it affects the outlook for the rest of the season...
"It gives us a lot of hope. The good thing about a loss like this is that we see what we need to work on and we'll work on it. Every day we have to keep getting better. There is no looking back."
