ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- University of New Mexico head volleyball coach Jeff Nelson welcomed 15 student-athletes back to campus today in preparation for the 2007 season. Nelson is in his first season leading the Lobo program after successful tenures at San Francisco and Texas Tech.
"It is really exciting to have everyone report today," said Nelson. "We worked out with them in the spring, but this is when it counts."
Nelson reported that the squad came back to campus healthy and in good shape with high spirits making it easy to be excited about the coming weeks of preseason practice.
The Lobos return 10 players and welcome five newcomers to the Johnson Center. Leading the pack are returning juniors Jeanne Fairchild, Sarah Kwasigroch, and Gayle Tripp. Fairchild, an outside hitter, led UNM with 3.33 kills per game which ranked ninth in the Mountain West Conference. Kwasigroch led the Lobos in assists, sixth in the MWC, with 10.57 per game, while Tripp, the libero, led in digs, fourth in the MWC, with 4.29 per game.
UNM was recently picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. It is the highest preseason ranking for the Lobos since the MWC was formed in 1999. The previous high was sixth in 1999, 2000 and 2001. UNM opens its season Aug. 18 with the annual alumni match at the Johnson Center at 7 p.m. Regular season action begins Aug. 24 when the Lobos host the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic.
