The University of New Mexico men's golf team started the season at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, shooting a 10-over 586 (291-295) in the first two rounds today. UNM is currently tied for eighth in the 18-team event at the Eisenhower Golf Club in Colorado Spring, Colo. UTEP leads the event, shooting a 20-under 556 (275-281) in the first two rounds.

Sophomore Brandon Putnam leads UNM at 2-over (71-75=146) after 36 holes. He shot an opening round 71 and a 75in the afternoon 18. He is currently tied for 26th in the individual standings. Junior Jon Sauer posted a 3-over 147 (73-74) and is tied for 30th. Junior Guillermo Chavez shot a pair of 74s today, tying for 39th at 4-over. Sophomore Jacob Lestishen shot a 5-over 77 in the first round, but rebounded with an even-par 72 in the second. He is tied for 48th at 5-over par. Junior Steve Saunders struggled with a 78 in his second round to finish with a 7-over 151 in the first two rounds.

The final round of the 2007 Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational is set for tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. UNM returns home next weekend for the 207 William H. Tucker Invitational at the UNM Championship Course. Action begins with the first two rounds on Friday, Sept. 14, and the final round on Saturday, Sept. 15.
