ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico Lobos (1-8-3, 0-3 MWC) were edged out by the Cowgirls of Wyoming (8-6, 3-0 MWC) 1-0 Friday night at the UNM Soccer Complex.

The game started off slow as the Lobos and the Cowgirls passed the ball back and forth for the first 18 minutes. New Mexico then went on a shooting spree, firing nine shots and two corner kicks at the Wyoming defense within 14 minutes. Several shots were right on target but the Cowgirl defense wouldn't rest, blocking three and saving three.

Momentum quickly turned in Wyoming's favor when Doreen Thompson gained control of the ball at midfield. Thompson slid past a Lobo defender and fed it ahead to teammate Mercy Adetoye. Adetoye dribbled left, then crossed back to her right about 25 yards. As her defender slipped, she sailed her shot past New Mexico junior goalkeeper Kristen Winters at the 35:00 minute mark.

The Cowgirls came out firing to start the second half, attempting seven shots in seven minutes before New Mexico put on the pressure again. The Lobo offense came alive firing one shot after another. Senior midfielder Erchen Theys looked like she had tied the game up with her header in the 58th minute but it hit the goal post and rolled just to the right of the net.

New Mexico kept the 1,746 fans on the edge of their seats right up until the end. With the crowd chanting away, junior midfielder LeAnne Hendren broke away with a defender right on her heals but misjudged her shot at the 89:12 mark, which hit near the bottom of the post and rolled right. Junior midfielder Rachael Addison attempted a cornerkick 15 seconds later but the Lobos could make nothing of it.

The Lobos outshot the Cowgirls, 25-15 and attempted six cornerkicks to Wyoming's five. Winters made two saves on the night while Wyoming's keeper Lori Scheider saved five.

Head coach Kit Vela said that everything tonight looked as it should, with the terrific crowd and the field in great condition, the women just couldn't score.
