Newport, R.I. - The University of New Mexico men's golf team didn't quite close the final round of the Adams Cup of Newport as it had hoped, shooting a 13-over-par 301 in the final round to finish in third place with a 20-over 884 for 54 holes.
The Lobos seemed poised to capture their first tournament title of the year after the first two rounds of play, leading the 17-team field by four strokes after the first round, 1-under 287 and a single stroke at the end of the day, standing at 7-over with a 583.
But the 13-over 301 wound up being eight strokes too many for the Lobos to maintain their lead. New Mexico finished with a 20-over 884, giving way to Southern Methodist (12-over 876) and Georgia Southern (18-over 882) over the final 18 holes.
Individually, senior Nick Geyer and sophomore James Erkenbeck tied for team honors, each shooting a 4-over 76 in the final round to finish tied for 13th with identical 221s. Senior Brandon Putnam finished tied for 16th with a 6-over 69-76-77=222, while junior Travis Ross tied for 21st with a 7-over 74-74-75=223.
