    This Week: The Lobos (3-0) take to the road for the Nike Portland Invitational. UNM will face American in a neutral match on Friday night, then play host Portland on Saturday night.

    • The Debut of Big Louie ... The volleyball team's new mascot, Big Louie, made his debut on Saturday, Aug. 29 during the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic.

    • Lobos Among Tops In Attendance ... The numbers from the first week of the 2009 collegiate volleyball season are in and the Lobos are currently ranked ninth with an average of 1,368 fans over the three sessions of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic on Aug. 28-29. It is the first time since 1996 that the Lobos started the season with over 1,000 fans at the first three matches of the season. New Mexico finished the 2008 season ranked 20th in the national attendance rankings. UNM averaged 1,570 fans over the 13 home matches of the 2008 season. The Lobos' season-high 2,381 fans showed up on Nov. 28 against New Mexico State. The Lobos are second in the MWC behind Colorado State in 11th with 2,387 fans per match.

    • Lehne Named MCM Elegante Lobo Classic MVP; Michaelsen and Buck on All-Tournament Team ... Senior middle blocker Anna Lehne was shocked to hear her name called as the Most Valuable Player of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic on Saturday night. Lehne was joined on the All-Tournament team by junior setter Jade Michaelsen and sophomore libero Allison Buck.

    • Michaelsen Named MWC Preseason Co-Player of the Year ... University of New Mexico setter Jade Michaelsen has been named the 2009 Mountain West Conference Preseason Co-Volleyball Player of the Year, along with Colorado State's Tessa Nelson. The Lobos were picked third in the MWC Preseason Poll with 112 points and three first-place votes, the highest MWC preseason ranking ever for New Mexico.

    About New Mexico (3-0, 0-0 MWC) ... UNM won the 2009 MCM Elegante Lobo Classic to begin the season ... It is the third season in a row the Lobos have started the season 3-0 and won the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic ... The Lobos were picked third in the 2009 Mountain West Conference Preseason Poll, the same place they finished the 2008 season. The big difference this season is UNM earned three first-place votes from the voting panel of coaches and media ... Junior setter Jade Michaelsen was named MWC Co-Preseason Player of the Year by the same voting group ... Michaelsen and senior Rose Morris are the team captains for 2009.

    About American (0-3, 0-0 Patriot League) ... The Eagles started the season 0-3 in the D.C. Volleyball Challenge. AU brought out a D.C. record crowd of 1,813 for the crosstown match-up against Georgetown on Aug. 29. Head coach Barry Goldberg is in his 21st season at the American helm. Junior Angelina Waterman leads AU with 4.00 kills per set over the first three matches of the season.

    About Portland (1-2, 0-0 West Coast Conference) ... The Pilots will face in-state opponent Oregon State on Wednesday night before hosting the Nike Portland Invitational. Joe Houck is in his second season as the head coach at UP. The Clemens sisters, Jessica and Maria, are leading the Pilots through the first three matches of the season. Jessica, a junior, averages 3.56 kills per set, followed by senior Maria with 2.89 kps.

    Jamming Johnson Early And Often ... Even though the official date for Jam Johnson in Thursday, Oct. 1 vs. San Diego State, the Lobos set the tone for the season during the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. UNM averaged 1,368 fans in three sessions, ranking ninth in the nation over the first weekend of action. It is the first time since 1996 that the Lobos have recorded over 1,000 fans in each of the first three matches of the season.

    Setting Records ... Junior setter Jade Michaelsen cracked the Top 10 on the UNM career assists list during the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. Michaelsen, from Tucson, Ariz., is currently 61 assists away from taking over ninth place from former Lobo Kelly Griffin.

    Blocking Into The Books ... Senior Anna Lehne, in addition to picking up the first all-tournament MVP honor of her career, moved onto the UNM career Top 10 lists for blocking - total blocks and block assists - over the weekend. She is two solo blocks away from hitting that list as well. Lehne, a senior from Pueblo, Colo., had a Top 10 season mark with 101 block assists in 2008.

    Lobos Win MCM Elegante Lobo Classic ... For the third year in a row, New Mexico won its own MCM Elegante Lobo Classic to start the season. The Lobos got things started with a 3-0 win over Colonial Athletic Association champions Delaware. Junior Taylor Hadfield led the Lobos with 10 kills, while junior setter Jade Michaelsen had 25 assists. Sophomore Allison Buck took over the starting libero position and had a team-leading 17 digs ... Saturday afternoon, UNM went five rounds with Portland State, pulling out a 3-2 win. Tournament MVP Anna Lehne recorded a career-high 17 kills to go along with eight blocks to keep UNM in the tournament championship hunt. Senior Rose Morris had 11 kills and Jade Michaelsen recorded her first double-double of the season - 46 assists and 11 digs ... The Lobos took UC Santa Barbara to 3-2 for an exciting championship battle. This time it was junior Lisa Meeter leading the way with 13 kills and sophomore Ashley Rhoades with nine kills and a career-high 10 blocks ... Michaelsen and Buck joined Lehne on the All-Tournament Team.
