ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico third baseman DJ Peterson and catcher Mitchell Garver were named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American first and second team, respectively, by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. This is the first All-American nod for Garver while Peterson was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American last year and was a pre-season second team honoree before this season.
Peterson and Garver, the Mountain West Co-Players of the Year, are having fantastic seasons and continue to rack up postseason accolades.
Peterson is a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award, both of which are annually given to the best player in college baseball. He currently leads the nation in total bases (174), ranks second in both RBIs (76) and slugging percentage (.734), fourth in hits (99), sixth in batting (.418), and 12th in home runs (16).
Garver is one of 12 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award, which is given each year to the best catcher in college baseball. He leads all Division I catchers in hits (100), average (.391), runs (68), and total bases (163). He is tied for the lead among catchers with 27 doubles, which also ranks second overall nationally. His hits and runs both rank third in the nation among all players, and his runs total is fifth.
Garver's hit total also ranks seventh all-time in a single season at UNM while Peterson's total bases are tied for fifth.
Their performances helped the Lobos win their first regular-season conference championship since 2000, their second straight MW Tournament championship, and earn their third consecutive NCAA postseason berth.
Peterson and Garver are the only players from the Mountain West on the 17-man first team and 24-man second team.
The Lobos open their NCAA regional against the University of San Diego at Jackie Robinson Stadium at UCLA on Friday at 4 p.m. (MT). Junior Austin House will get the start on the mound for UNM.
