COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- A pair of middle blockers were named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week on Monday morning by the MWC office. New Mexico's Ashley Rhoades shares the weekly award with TCU's Kourtney Edwards. It is the first career honor for Rhoades and the fourth for Edwards.
Rhoades, a 5-11 sophomore from Rio Rancho, N.M., led New Mexico to conference-match home wins over San Diego State (3-0) and Air Force (3-0) last week. Against the Aztecs, she collected 11 kills with no errors for a .647 hitting percentage. Rhoades also tallied two blocks and one dig vs. SDSU. Against Air Force, she posted a career-high 15 kills with only two errors in 21 attempts for an efficiency of .619, while also collecting three blocks. For the week, she averaged 4.33 kills, 0.83 blocks, 0.17 digs and 4.75 points per set, while hitting .632 (26-2-38).
Edwards, a 6-1 junior from Haltom City, Texas, led TCU to a 2-0 record in league play with victories over Air Force and San Diego State. In the 3-0 sweep over Air Force, Edwards tallied a career-best hitting percentage of .789 (15-0-19). Her hitting efficiency vs. the Falcons ranks third all-time in TCU history and is also the fourth-best percentage in the Conference's league-match history. In a four-set win over San Diego State, Edwards posted 16 kills and four blocks. On the week, Edwards averaged 4.43 kills, 0.57 blocks, 0.29 digs and 4.79 points per set with a .574 hitting percentage (31-4-47).
