Kelcy McKenna
Position: Assistant Coach
Experience: 3 Years

Associate Head Coach

McKenna was named associate head coach in August 2014.

Assistant Coach (2012-August 2014)

Coach McKenna and the Lobos saw a lot of success in the 2013-14 season finishing with a 17-8 record (the most wins in the program since 2004). UNM completed the non-conference season with a record of 11-6, going 1-5 against nationally ranked opponents. The Lobos’ non-conference season was highlighted by an upset victory over No. 54 Colorado. UNM went 6-2 against MW conference opponents. UNM claimed six consecutive conference victories before dropping to Fresno State in the final match of the MW Championships. This was UNM’s first finals appearance since 2004. Eight out of the nine players on the Lobo lineup finished the season with a winning record, including freshman Rachana Bhat’s impressive 16-0 finish. Freshman Lizette Blankers (24-16) and senior Michaela Bezdickova (10-23) earned All-MW honors in both singles and doubles. Blankers was also named Co-Freshman of the Year by the MW. Additionally, UNM had eight players earn academic honors from the conference. The Lobos were also recognized as a 2014 ITA All-Academic team for earning an impressive 3.61 GPA. UNM was ranked as high as #62 by the ITA during the season. The Lobos finished the season ranked 4th in the Mountain region.

McKenna was named the 2014 ITA Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year. She was much deserving of the award as she stepped up and coached the Lobos through the last month of the season while Coach Jasper was on maternity leave. With the help of UNM Chief Operating Officer Tim Cass, McKenna coached the Lobos to the finals of the MW Championships.

2012-13 Season: McKenna and Jasper teamed up to lead the Lobos to a 7-15, 1-7 MW record in their first year at UNM. The Lobos were led by seniors Kristin Eggleston, Lauren Richardson, Michaela Oldani, and juniors Susanna Kuuttila and Michaela Bezdickova. Despite strong leadership from the upperclassmen, the Lobos struggled to take that extra step and claim the victories they needed throughout the season. While UNM defeated Colorado State in regular season play, the Lobos’ season came to an end when they fell to the Rams in the quarterfinals of the MW championships.

In May 2013, McKenna won the US Open National Playoff Southwest Section Qualifying Tournament and earned a spot to compete in the US Open National Playoffs. She competed in singles and doubles.

Prior to UNM

McKenna arrived at New Mexico after a year stint with Marshall where she served as the Thundering Herd's assistant tennis coach. While at Marshall, McKenna assisted in the recruitment of student-athletes as well as coordinated compliance duties.

During McKenna's time at Marshall, the Thundering Herd achieved a 13-10 dual match record and as Marshall advanced to the Conference USA quarterfinals.

Collegiate Career

Before coaching, McKenna was a four-year letterwinner for Sheila McInerney at Arizona State, where she achieved Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American status in singles and doubles. She was also ranked as high as No. 3 in the country in singles and No. 16 in doubles while at ASU, and won multiple tournaments including the 2009 ITA Riviera All-American Tournament, the 2010 Thunderbird and the 2010 Cal Nike Invitational.

McKenna was also a frequent NCAA participant as a Sun Devil, having qualified four times as a team participant, three times as a singles participant and twice as a doubles participant.

While at ASU, McKenna was a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year as well as a Pac-10 All-Conference First-Team Selection in 2009 and 2011.

McKenna also was a member of the Pacific Northwest Section/National Team and attained a No. 1 United States Tennis Association (USTA) ranking in singles and doubles for the Pacific Northwest region of the Women's Open Division in 2010.

The North Bend, Ore., native graduated from ASU with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.
