Lobos vs. Creighton

Lobos fall to Creighton, 4-3 in the first game of the series.

Dave Martinez enters his second season at New Mexico after spending three seasons with the UNLV baseball program. During his tenure at UNLV, Martinez, a former player at UNLV, served as the Rebels' pitching coach as well as the program's recruiting coordinator.

Coming off his first season as the Lobos' pitching coach, Martinez watched his pitchers come to life at the end of the season as the Lobos made their improbable run at a MWC Tournament Championship. Martinez's pitchers helped the Lobos win four-straight games, beating BYU, 5-4, TCU, 4-3, Utah, 6-5, and TCU, again for the championship, 4-2. Under Martinez's tutelage, his pitchers were the key to the Lobos winning their first ever MWC championship.

Before he started coaching at the Division I level, Martinez spent two years coaching at Riverside Community College in Riverside, Calif., where he helped lead the Tigers to the 2007 California State Championship.

In 2006 he coached Tommy Hanson and Danny Gutierrez, who was at one point rated as the Texas Rangers No. 9 overall prospect. Martinez also served as an assistant at Purdue during 2005 and at Cal State San Bernardino in 2004. He also worked as an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles for two seasons.

Martinez earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Cal State San Bernardino in 2004.

Martinez, 36, and his wife, Saraya, have one son, Andrew, 2.
