Van der Vyver is a 2012 graduate from St. Peter's School in Cambridge, New Zealand. He lettered in all four years in tennis under High School Coach Gerrit Steenkamp. He won the New Zealand Nationals his first three years and won the New Zealand Nationals teams event his senior year. In his sophomore and junior year, he was a New Zealand representative at Malaysia and India, respectively.
He is the son of Hermann and Colleen Van der Vyver. His favorite food is bacon and he enjoys cricket, running and listening to music. He has one brother, William. He plans on attending medical school.
Head Coach Alan Dils on Van der Vyver:
"I'm very excited about Andrew. I think he is a very dynamic player. He has done a great job when he was playing in New Zealand. I've had the great fortune to watch him play before as a junior in high school. I think very highly about his game. I think he is going to be a guy before long that will be ranked nationally in both singles and doubles. I think he has a very big upside in his game, lefty, size, touch and spin. He is in great shape and has a great future in college tennis and for UNM Lobos."
