Lobo Football Post-Spring Position Breakdown, Parts I and II

Defensive line looks to establish mindset, offensive line looks to reestablish mindset

NEW MEXICO: Returning starter at quick guard…quietly turned in a terrific season in his UNM debut…has improved by leaps and bounds since arriving at New Mexico from Fort Scott CC in 2001…redshirted his first season at UNM...strong push by backup Robert Turner helped McDonald turn in a solid spring season...shows flashes of being a dominating player, just needs to become more consistent...does a good job using his hands in pass protection, but needs to improve his run blocking technique...coaches believe he could be much improved with a full year of game and practice experience under his belt.

2002 (JUNIOR): Started all 14 games...left midway through the New Mexico State game with a mild concussion, but played all 63 offensive snaps in the next game vs. Texas Tech...130 knockdown blocks...Wyoming...12 KD blocks in all 63 offensive snaps...he and his fellow “Hitmen” helped UNM churn out a season-high 292 rushing yards and did not allow a sack for the second-straight game...Colorado State...10 knockdowns in 72 snaps...helped pave the way for DonTrell Moore’s 181 yards rushing, the most allowed by the Rams all season, and did not allow a sack...San Diego State...career-high 20 KD blocks in all 74 snaps...Utah...tallied 6 knockdown blocks in all 74 offensive snaps...UNM’s offensive line did not allow a sack and paved the way for 268 yards on the ground against the nation’s 16th-ranked run defense...Utah State...had one of his best games of the year...career-high 16 KD blocks in all 81 offensive snaps...did a nice job getting downfield to spring several long gains on screen passes...UNLV...5 knockdown blocks in all 58 offensive plays...Texas Tech...team-high 9 KD blocks in all 63 snaps...New Mexico State...5 knockdowns in 39 snaps before suffering the injury...Baylor...7 knockdowns in 71 of 78 snaps...Air Force...9 knockdown blocks in all 71 offensive snaps...Weber State...14 knockdowns in all 52 offensive snaps...N.C. State...played all 59 offensive snaps in his first career start...8 knockdown blocks.
