Pre-season has come and gone in the blink of an eye. We returned Sunday afternoon from our four-day Colorado road trip/exhibition matches versus Air Force and Denver University. We learned a great deal about ourselves and have really grown from the experience. We played Air Force on Thursday night and put a very young squad on the field. Seniors Venter, Kafari, Calderon and Meile (junior) and Wehan (redshirt freshman) didn't suit up with all five nursing minor injuries. The kickoff was changed to 5:00 PM to avoid rain and lightning….didn't work. Five minutes into the match, the skies opened up. After a 40 minute delay, the match was moved to the Falcon Indoor Facility. A 120 x 70 pitch is a tough place to play.
Early in the first half, we dealt with more adversity. Junior midfielder Adrian Mora Delgado went down with a knee injury. We adjusted and finished out the first half with several quality chances. The second half started well, but we gave up a transition goal 20 minutes in and began to chase the game. Air Force defended well and scored against the run of play as we pushed for the equalizer: 2-0 Falcons. It was a costly lesson both in terms of result and losing Mora Delgado to a serious knee injury. Our young boys got a taste of Division I Soccer and the mentality and toughness it takes to win. We asked for challenges and adversity and got just what we asked for and more.
We traveled north on I-25 Friday afternoon in preparation for Saturday night’s match versus Denver. Sharp training session Friday afternoon with Venter, Calderon, Kafari and Wehan back in the line-up. 7:00 scheduled kick-off and once again, the weather wasn't kind to us. After a 60 minute delay, the skies cleared and we got things rolling on a wet, slippery field. I was real proud of our performance. We dealt with the conditions and scored a great goal in the 75th minute to win the match 1-0. Freshman Niko Hansen with the goal off the work of James Rogers. The team showed mental and physical toughness and quality in attack. We got everything out of the trip we could ask for (except for the injury to Adrian).
