Women’s Tennis Heads to NMSU for Fall Season Opener

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobo women’s tennis program is kicking off its season at the 2013 Aggie Invitational taking place at New Mexico State University, Sept. 13-15. 

The University of New Mexico is competing in a series of singles and doubles matches against opponents from eight different colleges including Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Abilene Christian, University of Texas-El Paso, Tarleton State, Arizona, and Western New Mexico.  There are nine different brackets of matches that the Lobos will be competing in throughout the weekend.

UNM’s Meredith Hopson, Susan Baklini, Emily Olivier, Dominique Dulski, Rachana Bhat, Lizette Blankers, Natasha Smith, and Madison Porter are all starting off the tournament competing in singles matches. All eight of these athletes are recent additions to the Lobo tennis team. All but Smith, a transfer from the University of Utah, are freshmen. The Aggie Invitational is the first college tennis tournament of their career.

In the doubles category, Blankers and Smith will be competing together in the Jemez Doubles bracket along with teammates Baklini and Olivier. The Laguna Doubles bracket will feature duo Bhat and Porter. Dolski and Hopson will compete as a team in the Laguna Doubles bracket as well.

Second-year head coach Erica Jasper and her squad of young Lobos will begin their fall season at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by New Mexico State, Sept. 13-15. 

Tournament play will begin each day at 9:00 a.m. (MTN) at the NMSU Tennis Center.
