ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – This Saturday, Sept. 14th, marks the unofficial beginning of University of New Mexico swimming and diving team’s season as they compete in the Intra-Squad meet. This event marks the beginning of head coach Kunio Kono’s second season in charge and the first for assistant coaches Aimee Dunavant and Julie Weddle.
The meet is the culmination of the “Cherry-Silver Games” that the athletes participated in this past week which allowed them to take part in team bonding and building activities such as kicking and pull-up competitions. These events served as helpful preparation with each other not only for the Intra-Squad meet but the season as well.
The Intra-Squad meet will be held in the Seidler Natatorium on UNM’s main campus and will not provide for individual or team records but serve as good practice for the upcoming season. Six freshman Lucile Chevalier, Lindsey Englestead, Anna Lengyel, Jessica Liss, Keala McKee, Fanni Pataki, and Abigail Wheeler will be making their debuts for New Mexico and have the opportunity to show Kono what they can do for the team.
“This meet is really for our new swimmers to show what they can do for the team,” said Kono. “It is obviously not real and just for fun, but it will let us see where both the freshmen and veterans are.”
The season is fast approaching for the Lobos, who will host the Falcons of Air Force on Sat. Oct. 5 at 11 am. The intra-squad will serve as an exciting event to get the new season going.
