In Burlington, Iowa, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is one stroke off the lead and tied for second place after the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Lobos fired an opening-round, 2-over-par 290 on Sunday night, trailing Houston by one stroke. Oklahoma is tied with New Mexico for second, followed by Virginia Tech (4-over 292) and Jacksonville State (5-over 293).
The tournament features 15 teams from 15 different conferences.
Junior Victor Perez currently is second in the individual standings with a 2-under 70. His round included five birdies and three bogeys. He trails Ball State’s Tyler Merkel by one stroke in the 75-player field. Merkel was 5 under through 12 holes but gave two strokes back on his final six holes for an opening-round 69.
Lobos junior Gavin Green appeared headed for a tie with Perez but bogeyed No. 18 and settled for a 1-under 71 on Sunday. He is in a seven-way tie for third.
Junior Sean Romero is tied for 28th after shooting a 2-over 74. Sophomore Joe Abella and true freshman Andrej Bevins are tied for 37th at 3-over 75. Bevins birdied two of his final three holes and played his final five holes at 1-under to help the Lobos’ cause.
The top four scores from each team are counted toward each school’s collective score.
Round two of the 54-hole event is Monday. The Lobos will tee off at 9:30 a.m. MT. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
