Albuquerque, N.M. – The Pepperdine Waves lived up to their preseason hype by cruising the UNM Championship Course in 3-under par and hold a four-shot 36-hole lead over Oregon after two rounds of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational.
The New Mexico Lobos are 27 shots back in ninth place at 608.
“The course conditions, because of the wind we had last night, left the greens firm and fast and we didn’t adjust quick enough,” said Lobo Coach Jill Trujillo. “And we did not take advantage of the par fives today.”
UC Davis is in third place at 588 followed by Northwestern and Iowa State at 589. Colorado is a distant sixth at 599. The team race going into Saturday’s final 18 holes appears to be a five-team chase with Pepperdine looking over its shoulder.
“I saw a lot of toughness in my freshmen,” said Trujillo. “I think my seniors are a little bit disappointed because they have been playing so well out here. Anytime you shoot over par on your home course you are going to be a little disappointed.
“The best thing they can do is get over it quickly. We still have tomorrow and we can move up a lot tomorrow.”
Oregon’s Cassy Isagawa has a nice four-shot lead going into Saturday’s final 18 after the Duck tied the tournament record for 36 holes with a card of 70-68—138. Pepperdine’s Somin Lee is in second place at 70-72—142 and San Diego State’s Sirene Blair and Betty Chen of UC Davis are in a tie for third place at 143. The Wave’s Grace Na, a First Team All-American in 2012-13, is in the hunt at 144.
The Lobos have no players in the chase for individual honors. Senior Manon De Roey went 77-73 for a 150 total and is tied for 25th place. Senior Sammi Stevens went 76-76 for a 152 total followed by freshman Manon Molle at 153, freshman Katerina Jaeger at 153 and senior Sofia Hoglund at 159.
“They are sitting there saying, ‘I’m going to get it tomorrow,’” Trujillo said of her team. “My seniors, I expect them to take it low. “
